Rumour Mill: Eubank Jr Camp in Talks With Canelo Camp
According to Sky Sports the dialogue between the Canelo Alvarez and Chris Eubank Jr about a potential fight has started. The discussions are at an early stage, but there’s hope that a deal could be done.
Eubank Jr’s promoter, Ben Shalom, said… “We’ve already started small conversations around the Canelo fight. If he’s ever going to fight in the UK, that’s the fight and that would sell out Wembley Stadium.”
Forgive me for thinking there’s more than a little promoter sauce added to that comment, because frankly I think Canelo walks straight through Eubank. I’m not sure it’d feature too highly on the list of British fight fans fantasy bouts, but if it brings Canelo to the UK, fantastic.
Eubank has made no secret of his wish to fight Canelo one day, so we can’t be surprised they’ve reached out.
Canelo Out of Options?
There’s a good chance that the Canelo camp see this bout as an easy way to make a lot of money and keep their man active. In reality, there’s little in the way of challenge at 168 for him. He’s dealt with Munguia and Plant. Iglesias isn’t ready yet, so that leaves Mbilli as a potential option, but there’s little noise around that fight yet.
He’s stepped up to light heavyweight a couple of times with mixed success – a title win against Kovalev, but a loss against Bivol. Given Bivol will likely look to rematch Beterbiev next (and Alvarez probably couldn’t beat Bivol anyway), it feels like that door is closed.
That leaves us with one likely outcome – a ‘keep busy’ fight whilst the super middleweight landscape becomes clearer.
The UK is a best stadium fight scene in the world. Canelo would easily fill Wembley, coupled with the fact that a lot of people would pay just to see Eubank get knocked out, it makes sense. The pay per view buys would make both guys a lot of money, and it gives a game yet limited Eubank Jr a title shot. He’s not a ridiculous opponent, he’s been on the scene for a long time and only has 3 losses to his name.
He’s just not that good. In any of the previous eras of middleweights and super middleweights, he’d have a lot more losses on his record.
