OPINION: Jake Paul Will NEVER Be Taken Seriously as a Boxer

Jake Paul comes from a world of online celebrity. A world where filming every waking minute is confused with content. Pratting about for views, clicks and likes. I suppose if millions are willing to watch it, it is.

But that’s not why the boxing world won’t take him seriously.

You can forgive a kid for pratting about making YouTube videos. We all do stupid things when we’re young. You can even forgive the bravado and the bullshit of his self-hyping. That’s all part of the boxing game. It always will be.

So Why Won’t He be Taken Seriously as a Boxer?

Jake Paul has carved himself a unique niche in boxing. Thanks to his celebrity status, he’s the money fight in the game for anyone not competing for world titles.

Thanks to his mouth, he’s also got a long line of people wanting to knock him out.

And that puts him in a position of power. He’s got lots of options, so he can pick the easy fights that look credible. Lets ignore the first handful of fights against debutants, but we can’t ignore the rest.

Anderson Silva would have been a credible opponent a decade ago. Nate Diaz would have been a credible opponent in an MMA setting. Mike Tyson is nearly 60 years old and has suffered numerous health challenges.

When he stepped up to face a ‘boxer’ in Tommy Fury, he lost. Let’s be honest, if it wasn’t for the Fury name, nobody would be taking Tommy Fury seriously as a boxer either – not yet, anyway.

And he was good enough to beat Jake Paul.

Jake Paul Doesn’t Want to be a Boxer

Let’s get one thing straight, Jake Paul doesn’t want to be a boxer. He wants to agitate boxers, and make money doing so. He’ll pick an easy, yet high profile fight to get the attention, call out many much better than him, and the cycle repeats.

If he wanted to earn himself some credibility as a boxer, there’s plenty of cruiserweights out there who would love the opportunity for a money fight.

I’d even give him some respect if they weren’t in the top 10 – someone like Jack Massey would be ideal. A former title holder with his best days behind him. If Paul truly believes he’s that good, step up and fight a real boxer. It’s the only way you’ll make the boxing fraternity not think you’re a laughing stock.

But he won’t.

If he wasn’t so quick to proclaim his abilities, a lot of the boxing world would probably respect him. If he stuck to YouTube boxing, he wouldn’t annoy so many people. When he starts calling out real boxers, but doesn’t back it up, that’s when he lost (what little) dignity he had in the sport.

But Netflix will make a few quid out of him, so the show will go on.
