Connor Benn Yet To Submit Application To Return To UK Rings
Conor Benn, the British welterweight boxer, is on the verge of resuming his professional career in the UK. However, Benn and his team are yet to submit an application. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) recently confirmed that Benn’s suspension has been lifted following a lengthy legal battle stemming from two failed drug tests in 2022.
Robert Smith, General Secretary of the BBBofC, stated that Benn can now apply for a new boxing licence, and there appears to be no barrier to him fighting in Britain once the application is reviewed and approved. However, as of now, no formal application has been submitted by Benn or his team. This comes after a video emerged of Connor Benn in training, as he hit the pads and looked dangerous as he clearly looks to step back into the ring soon.
The controversy began when Benn tested positive for Clomifene, a banned substance, in the build-up to his highly anticipated fight with Chris Eubank Jr. in 2022. The findings led to the fight’s cancellation and sparked an extensive investigation by the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD).
In November 2024, the independent National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) ruled that UKAD had failed to prove Benn’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt, clearing him to fight again. UKAD declined to appeal this decision, closing the case on UK soil, though the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) retains the right to pursue an appeal.
Conor Benn is the son of former world champion Nigel Benn. Conor turned professional in 2016 and quickly built a strong reputation, remaining undefeated in his first 21 fights, with 14 wins by knockout. Benn, now 28, has consistently maintained his innocence, describing the last two years as the “toughest fight of his life.” He expressed his gratitude to supporters and reiterated his commitment to clean sport.
The suspension prevented Benn from boxing in the UK, forcing him to fight abroad, including in Florida and Mexico, but he remains a polarising figure within the sport due to the unresolved questions surrounding the initial positive tests.
Looking ahead, Benn’s return to the ring is expected to reignite discussions about a potential bout with Eubank Jr., a fight that still carries significant interest among fans. There is also speculation about other opponents, including WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, whom Benn has publicly called out.
Benn’s return to UK boxing could see him re-establish his career in one of the most competitive divisions in the sport, but it is also likely to spark renewed scrutiny of the doping allegations and the handling of his case
